Manager, Research and Innovation

Elevate’s Manager, Research and Innovation is responsible for supporting Elevate’s innovation agenda to accelerate equitable climate action. The Manager, Research and Innovation leads and manages technical analysis and research and supports project development. The role manages projects and staff that cover research, demonstration, and incubation of critical strategies to achieve climate equity. The position implements priorities in the Research and Innovation team’s three focus areas of Building Electrification and Decarbonization, Healthy Homes and Indoor Air Quality, and Water and Energy Equity, Security, and Resiliency.

The Manager, Research and Innovation reports directly to the Associate Director, Research and Innovation and collaborates closely with key external partners and staff across Elevate business units. This position can be performed remotely anywhere within the United States, with agreed upon travel to Elevate’s headquarters in Chicago, Illinois.


  • Manage research and innovation projects and perform high-quality technical analysis (quantitative, qualitative, and/or spatial analysis, and/or field validation)
  • Manage multiple projects and partners simultaneously in various stages to meet Elevate’s short- and long-term objectives, working with clients to set expectations and meet deliverables
  • Support protocols and processes for standardized statistics, database, survey, and field validation practices across the organization
  • Represent Elevate as a subject matter expert at conferences and in industry workgroups and coalitions
  • Support fundraising and external engagement
  • Support strategic partnership activities to advance climate equity strategies
  • Respond promptly and professionally to public inquiries
  • Develop and/or manage Elevate staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills

  • Advanced degree or equivalent relevant industry work experience in energy or climate solutions
  • 5+ years of related work experience including but not limited to building science, efficiency and renewable energy program implementation, climate or environmental justice, smart grid, water, and sustainability
  • Demonstrated track record of project management experience
  • Excellent written communication and presentation skills for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience with quantitative, statistical, and social science research methods; GIS and spatial analysis experience a plus
  • Commitment to energy, climate, or environmental justice issues
