Clean Energy Leadership: Matthias’ Journey into Solar
Clean Energy Leadership opened the door for Matthias to deepen his understanding of the solar industry and prepare for new opportunities in the clean energy workforce. When Matthias enrolled in Elevate’s solar training program, he was not just signing up for a course. He was stepping into what he now describes as an apprenticeship experience that reshaped his understanding of energy, opportunity, and impact.
Matthias first heard about the program through his mom, who attends Soul City Church. There, she met someone connected to Cultivate Collective who shared information about Elevate’s solar training partnership. Knowing that Matthias was studying environmental science at community college and wanted more hands-on experience, she immediately encouraged him to apply. “I always wanted more practical work,” he said. “When my mom told me about it, I signed up.”
From outside, Matthias expected a traditional classroom setup with slides, lectures, and a final exam. Instead, he found something much more immersive. “It felt more like an apprenticeship,” he explained. Even while reviewing slides, students were practicing. Instructors would demonstrate wiring a light switch, then hand the responsibility over to the students. If someone struggled, they were guided, not rescued. “They told you what you were doing wrong, walked you through it, but they would not do it for you.”
That balance built confidence. The environment was supportive, uplifting, and respectful. Safety was emphasized constantly. Students learned not only solar fundamentals but also the basics of electricity, including how dangerous it can be if handled improperly. “Electricity does not discriminate,” Matthias said. “It can kill. But if you follow the safety precautions, you will be safe.” The program instilled both technical skill and professional discipline.
One of the most impactful parts of the training was the first six weeks, when students explored the broader context of solar energy. They studied the history of solar dating back to the 1930s and 1940s, how solar panels are manufactured, global production trends, and the role legislation plays in shaping the industry. They examined where solar stands today and where it could lead in the future. “It helped me understand where solar is now, where it used to be, and where it can take us,” he said.
Instead of focusing only on installation math and kilowatt calculations, the program offered a holistic understanding of energy systems. That broader perspective deepened his commitment. “I came out of the program with a new skill,” he said. “And it is a skill that is going to take us into the future.”
For Matthias, solar energy is not optional. “Solar is the future whether anybody likes it or not,” he said. He sees solar as empowerment, cutting electric bills in half, eliminating them entirely, and allowing communities to generate their own power. He speaks passionately about reducing dependence on coal and other nonrenewable resources. “It is air people should not have to breathe,” he said. “Solar is one of the biggest steps forward.”
He also connects clean energy to economic justice. As solar becomes cheaper each year, shifting toward renewables could free up enormous financial resources. After being hit by a car in front of a police station, Matthias refused an ambulance because he could not afford it. “I just got hit by a car and I had to say no to the ambulance,” he shared. That experience shaped his perspective. For him, energy reform is not isolated from broader social systems. If we reduce energy costs, we can redirect money into healthcare, education, and community programs.
Although he is just getting started, Matthias already has a vision for his future. In the next five to ten years, he hopes to help power entire communities, be part of large scale solar installations, and maybe even generate community power on vacant lots. “I would love to be part of a project that powers a whole community,” he said.
His advice for future participants is simple. Be open minded. Explore every opportunity. Stay on top of the material. “This is one of the fastest growing fields in the country,” he said. Beyond certification, the program upgrades your quality of life. Students learn how to evaluate energy efficient appliances, reduce energy use at home, and lower their bills. Once you understand solar installation, it changes how you see your own home. “You do not have to pay for power forever,” Matthias said. “You can produce your own.”
Matthias recently reached an exciting milestone in his career journey. He accepted a job offer with Sesenergi and officially began his new role yesterday. This opportunity marks an important step forward, and we are thrilled to see him applying the skills and experience he has developed as he continues building his career in the energy industry.
