A comfortable and affordable home is essential for everyone, but especially for seniors and older adults who spend more time at home. Chicago homes are old and in need of repair, with 65% of Chicago housing built before 1969. This means there are thousands of Chicago seniors that live in older homes in need of repairs.
Elevate delivers free health, safety, and accessibility repairs for homeowners throughout the Chicagoland area to help them stay safe and comfortable in their homes throughout old age. This work includes:
- Small accessibility repairs such as installing grab bars or hand rails, replacing toilets, and repairing stairs
- Remediation of health and safety hazards such as mold, asbestos, lead, or flooding
- Installation of carbon monoxide detectors, smoke alarms, and fire extinguishers
- Roof and/or porch repair and replacement
Elevate is one of several organizations that administers these repairs through the City of Chicago’s Small Accessibility Repairs for Seniors (SARFS) program and its Home Repair Program. Our work is also funded through the Illinois Home Accessibility Program (HAP) and the federal Older Adult Home Modification Program.
